Sustainability

When I’m having creative ideas, I critically think about materials and methods so that I can champion environmental sustainability in an industrial setting.

This begins with using recovered metals but there’s always room for improvement when it comes to minimising our environmental impact. I know I can do better and will keep trying to make this list longer!

  • Using re-purposed metals such as steel, brass and copper from furniture making offcuts

  • Recyclable, minimal packaging

  • Use of hand tools

  • Small made to order fabrication, no mass production

  • Use of natural materials in prep work (for example beeswax over modern jewellers’ waxes which contain plastics)

  • Collecting and re-using offcut from my own creations

  • Challenge the perceptions and “perceived” value of metals less commonly used in modern jewellery; they’re all a precious resource in my mind and I hope my creations help convince people that they are all beautiful.

  • Provide care advice for customers; metals are almost endlessly recyclable and with proper care, re-purposed pieces will last their own lifetime.

  • Domestic and industrial recycling

  • Regular volunteer work with our local woodland conservation group

It can be difficult for small independents to adopt environmentally friendly practices for a variety of factors; prohibitive costs and the practicalities of doing so within a rented industrial space are just a couple.

I’d love to hear from you if you have information or ideas that I might be able to pursue to continue on a greener journey.

Please take a look at the Materials & Care page for more information about the metals I use and how to care for them.
